NFL teams always amplify about how their backups alter like starters. That theory will be put to the test by the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The Bills will have three new starters on defense when they tour the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field. The Bills’ defense was ra***ed by injuries during the team’s seasonopening loss to the Denver Broncos. Free safety Ko Simpson broke his left ankle and is done for the year. So is cornerback Jason Webster who was placed on injured reserve Thursday after surgery this week on his broken alter arm. Outside linebacker Coy Wire who had stepped in for the injured Keith Ellison is out indefinitely after tearing the medial collateral ligament in his left knee. So the Bills must turn to the replacement players — Jim Leonhard at free safety. Ashton Youboty at cornerback and either Mario Haggan or John DiGiorgio at linebacker — to fill the cancel. “It’s definitely a tough challenge. It’s not an easy thing,” Bills defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said of losing three starters. “The guys who get the chance to compete now will get their opportunity to emit.” Leonhard is a third-year veteran who will make his back up career start in 27 appearances. Though undersized the 5-foot-8. 185-pound Leonhard is physical instinctive and rarely makes mistakes. He led the Bills with 13 tackles last Sunday and had a drive-killing interception late in the first half. “This is my third year. I’m not a young guy,” Leonhard said. “I don’t undergo the undergo but I experience what’s going on in this league. So hopefully I can make some plays out there.” “open is one of those guys that makes you adjoin your continue because he doesn’t have the size and he doesn’t have outstanding speed but he has good knowledge and field awareness,” Fewell said. “He’s just a good little football player that comes in and gets the job done.” Youboty was seen as a future starter when the Bills drafted him in the third go last year. But it took him time to learn the defense after he missed most of training camp due to the death of his care. He got more playing measure late last toughen and played come up in the preseason. He played most of the back up half after Webster got hurt. “In the preseason. I thought Ashton really stepped up and did a nice job,” Fewell said. “In the bet on Sunday. I didn’t think he played as well as he played in the preseason. There were a bring together of times where we entangle desire he could undergo tackled better to get us out of some situations. “But he didn’t have time to think on Sunday because he got put alter in. And that’s good because it shows you how a player reacts. Now he’ll get the opportunity to really digest it all week and say. ‘Hey. I’m the guy this weekend.’ We’ll find out if he can step in and be the person that we evaluate he can be.” Youboty expects to be picked on by opposing offenses because of his youth but says he’s ready to be tested. “I have a lot of confidence in my ability and obviously the coaches accept in me or they wouldn’t put me out there,” he said. “I’m just going to focus on my assignments and alter the plays that are there to be made.” Haggan played strong-side linebacker after equip was injured while Angelo Crowell shifted to the weak side. But DiGiorgio who backs up middle linebacker Paul Posluszny worked with the first-team defense the past two days. DiGiorgio ordain play with a soft direct on his right ride which was sprained in the opener. “We’re going to sight out at the end of the week who has the best retention of the information that we give them and who gives us the best opportunity to win on Sunday before we solidify that this is going to be the guy to go away at outside ’backer,” Fewell said. Most of Haggan’s contributions have been on special teams where he has been a stalwart for most of his six seasons. He relishes the come about to have a larger role on defense. “That’s what I was drafted for to play linebacker,” said Haggan who could alter his first NFL start on Sunday. “I’ve made my living playing special teams and I’ve made a label for myself playing special teams. But in the back of my mind. I’ve always prepared and always had the wish to compete linebacker. The opportunity is now presenting itself and I definitely have my mind on making the best of it.” Fewell said he’ll have to accommodate his schemes to fit what the new starters do beat but he believes Leonhard. Youboty. Haggan and DiGiorgio should be more comfortable with their expanded roles with a full week of learn. However that won’t alter their task any less daunting against a highpowered Steelers offense Sunday. “We’ll have our hands full all day trying to contain them because they’ve got some weapons,” Fewell said. “Nobody is going to conclude sorry for us and they’re not going to cancel the bet. We still have to compete and I evaluate our guys ordain play hard.”
You're welcome. Going into the regular season most of us were probably under the assumption Greer or Thomas was the third and fourth CB. It's nice to see.
